Automated production of electronic circuit boards made it possible to significantly reduce the time of manufacture and save consumables. A former labyrinth of wires, the circuit is now replaced with one or two circuit boards. Service is now as simple as simply changing the microchip making the service less expensive. The electronic printed circuit board marked a new era of engineering and research with improved household utilities and equipment that became more ergonomic and light compared with their predecessors.
The basis of the electronic circuit is an insulator. The conductive pattern is placed on one or both sides of the plate. Glass-cloth-base laminate is often used as such material being durable and safe even when the humidity is high. Glass-cloth-base laminate is made of several layers of pressed glass cloth and epoxy resin. In addition to its electrical insulating properties the material has a specific glass transition point, or melting temperature. The higher the point, the lower the probability of the plate deformation. Glass-cloth-base laminate yields under the heat of 300 to 500 degrees Centigrade.
The conductive pattern is made of copper foil printed to the plate’s basis. There are one-side boards, double-sided boards, and multilayer boards.
Aluminium-based printed boards are the most popular because aluminium features high heat conductivity, impact and vibration resistance. The aluminium-based printed boards are used for maximum heat removal, i.e. in LED lamps or light reflecting devices.
Regardless of the progress in electronics the obsolete equipment is still available for financial reasons. As a result, the circuit board quality requirements became more systemic in terms of accuracy class. The index depends on a conductor’s minimum width. The higher the class, the more accurate the circuit. The class number has a direct impact on the product’s price. This requirement is not always justified because a great number of high quality circuit boards are manufactured in compliance with the first class. It is the design engineer’s skill that determines a class which the finished circuit will be assigned to.
